{"id":1100,"date":"2016-12-28T11:17:36","date_gmt":"2016-12-28T16:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/?p=1100"},"modified":"2017-02-28T11:19:47","modified_gmt":"2017-02-28T16:19:47","slug":"how-to-smash-fascism-without-really-trying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2016\/12\/how-to-smash-fascism-without-really-trying\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Smash Fascism without Really Trying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here&#8217;s the thing about dictatorial violations (be they as outrageous as genocide or as comparably mild as yelling at a barista for wishing a &#8220;Happy Holidays!&#8221;): <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They rarely have the support of the majority of the population\u2014and certainly never <i>start<\/i> with even half the population on board.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Atrocities don&#8217;t require the majority&#8217;s active participation; they just need the majority&#8217;s active acquiescence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And the majority will acquiesce even to the most terrible crimes as long as those aren&#8217;t too far outside the norm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The wider the margin between &#8220;normal&#8221; and &#8220;atrocity,&#8221; the safer we all are; a pot that&#8217;s not allowed to even simmer can never boil over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So here&#8217;s a game plan for keeping the Melting Pot lukewarm:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Learn these three sentences:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>An <b>honestly curious<\/b> <i>&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure I follow you?&#8221;<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Other options: <i>&#8220;Hunh; why do you think that?&#8221;<\/i>)<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">A <b>bemused<\/b>: <i>&#8220;You don&#8217;t <\/i><b><i>really<\/i><\/b><i> believe <\/i><b><i>that<\/i><\/b><i>, do you?&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">A <b>stern<\/b>: <i>&#8220;Not OK, dude.&#8221;<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not angry\u2014<b><i>never angry<\/i><\/b>, because anger energizes the mob\u2014but stern, like scolding a dog or child.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Practice saying your sentences in a mirror. Make sure you&#8217;re getting the emotion right for each, and <b>not getting angry<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Use these <b><i>in person\u2014<\/i>over the phone or in conversation, your voice in their ear, your eyes on theirs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>This tactic doesn&#8217;t work online or in print; it&#8217;s a matter of emotional connection, and that connection is made one-on-one, person-to-person.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Use this tactic with family and friends and coworkers and guys who are sorta being dicks in the coffee shop.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Use it freely and often and in good humor. Connect and connect and connect and connect with your fellow humans, always keep them a little nervous about that &#8220;off-color joke&#8221; or that &#8220;innocent&#8221; cat call or &#8220;telling it like it is.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Note that <b>1.1<\/b>\u00a0and <b>1.2<\/b>\u00a0are questions\u2014because you always want to knock people off balance, and oblige them to question their beliefs and justify them (even if only internally).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>1.3<\/b>\u00a0is simple, obvious, disengaged dissaproval.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You wouldn&#8217;t argue with a child about running out in the street or a dog about whether or not your leg is for humping; you give a sharp &#8220;Nope!&#8221; and move on with your life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The same here.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No one ever argued their way out of a genocide, but plenty of awfulness has been prevented by scolding grannies and scoffing naysayers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Remember<\/i>: <em><strong>If the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, then the only thing needed for evil to falter is for good folks to do something<\/strong><\/em>\u2014shit, almost <i>anything<\/i>, just as long as you aren&#8217;t sitting on your hands, biting your tongues, and looking the other way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Looking the other way is exactly what the lynch mob wants you to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">(see also: <a href=\"https:\/\/thecorrespondent.com\/5696\/were-heading-into-dark-times-this-is-how-to-be-your-own-light-in-the-age-of-trump\/1611114266432-e23ea1a6\">We\u2019re heading into dark times.
