I just do.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There&#8217;s something about it that makes it, in many ways, a more complete and superior horror story than any of the like-length <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCpJ6Dn01AqjvFVN2EiK72Ag\">CryptTV<\/a> videos on YouTube.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I think the principal problem is that when a &#8220;horror film&#8221; goes below ~3mins, the filmmakers almost invariably seem to decide that all they can possibly do in that time is craft a jump scare.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As such, the piece is inherently callous (if not outright cruel) to the viewer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It&#8217;s bullying art, art that has decided it needs (or should, or is right) to <i>inflict<\/i> itself on you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That doesn&#8217;t mean that I don&#8217;t like art that confronts you with unpleasant realities\u2014in fact, I sorta like that art best of all\u2014but I want for us to go to that place together (both as a person making art and a person consuming it).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But then we have something like this\u2014or like the weird, wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2016\/09\/smartpipe-inc-is-a-registered-sex-offender\/\">[Adult Swim]<\/a> videos I&#8217;ve linked in the past.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because these things <i>don&#8217;t<\/i> think of themselves as horror, I feel like they&#8217;re more open to creating a more nuanced kind of horror, even in a much more compressed chunk of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The horror in this <i>SNL<\/i> skit is in what it implies about the universe that this family lives in, all the stuff that&#8217;s outside the frame (including that escaped almost-pizza beast).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And part of what makes that horror is the fact that the world we <em>actually really live<\/em> <em>in<\/em>\u2014this world, where I am sitting and tying and you are sitting and reading\u2014is outside that frame too, and thus is sharing space with the horrifying reality that put\u00a0these characters in that room with that awful thing (brought to you by Pfizer<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u2122<\/span><span class=\"s1\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KLHRjaUBb3o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I dunno;
