{"id":2162,"date":"2019-11-06T10:12:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/?p=2162"},"modified":"2019-11-05T15:17:01","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T20:17:01","slug":"take-11-minutes-and-learn-the-secrets-to-the-science-of-persuasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2019\/11\/take-11-minutes-and-learn-the-secrets-to-the-science-of-persuasion\/","title":{"rendered":"Take 11 Minutes and Learn the Secrets to the Science of Persuasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cFdCzN7RYbw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This video is mostly narrated by\u00a0Dr. Robert Cialdini, who&#8217;s most famous for his book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33TzoWD\">Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(where he first presented most of\u00a0the ideas seen here).\u00a0 This is a text book\u2014if not the Bible\u2014on how to talk to people about things that you really care about, and get them to see your perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Cialdini started out as a\u00a0research psychologist, and my understanding (which\u00a0fits the\u00a0tone of the book) is that\u00a0he\u00a0began\u00a0working on the book\u2014which catalogues and examines several categories of\u00a0sales\/influence tricks and techniques\u2014as a sort of warning to lay folks.\u00a0After its first publication, it became enormously influential\u00a0among marketers, copywriters, businessfolk, and all manner of modern propogandists.\u00a0 If you write for any\u00a0purpose (e.g., speechs, op-ed, news, fiction, non-fiction, persuading\u00a0folks on the fence to vote for this or that) or run any sort of business, you need to read this book.\u00a0 For that matter,\u00a0even\u00a0if you<em><strong> don&#8217;t<\/strong><\/em> seek to persuade anyone of anything, I still\u00a0<em>strongly<\/em>\u00a0recommend\u00a0every adult in America\u00a0\u00a0read this book, in order to better understand how it is you&#8217;ve come to believe what you believe, embrace what you embrace, and reject what &#8220;just isn&#8217;t your thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(While we&#8217;re on the topic, you really should also read\u00a0Darrell Huff&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2W0H5Ym\">HOW TO LIE WITH STATISTICS<\/a><\/em>;\u00a0the black arts outlined in these two books cover the two major toolsets that the politically and economically motivated are using to manipulate you and your loved ones every single day.\u00a0 Get your hands on Master&#8217;s tools; consider their possible applications in tearing down Master&#8217;s house*.)<\/p>\n<p>Caveat: Yes, some of the hard data and studies in\u00a0the original\u00a0<em>Influence<\/em>\u00a0haven&#8217;t aged well, but the bold strokes\u2014about <em><strong>how people behave and how our minds get changed without our realizing it<\/strong><\/em>\u2014is still rock solid.<\/p>\n<p>BONUS:\u00a0Check out this analysis of Oprah, and compare it with what Cialdini describes above:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v-ps2nfkAiA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><small> * I know that isn&#8217;t the quote; me and\u00a0Audre Lorde have a difference of opinions here.<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This video is mostly narrated by\u00a0Dr. Robert Cialdini, who&#8217;s most famous for his book\u00a0Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion\u00a0(where he first presented most of\u00a0the ideas seen here).\u00a0 This is a text book\u2014if not the Bible\u2014on how to talk to people about things that you really care about, and get them to see your perspective.
