From here on out it&#8217;s nothing but puppies with lightsabers!<br \/>\n<a title=\"The Ann Arbor Chronicle | In It For The Money: Brawling About Guns\" href=\"http:\/\/annarborchronicle.com\/2013\/06\/20\/in-it-for-the-money-brawling-about-guns\/\">The Ann Arbor Chronicle | In It For The Money: Brawling About Guns<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=blkq>\nMaybe more to the point, I can have a deep and genuine affection for guns, and still believe that maybe it\u2019s time that we get past our core American notion \u2013 one effectively enshrined in the Second Amendment \u2013 that violence is a valid and respectable solution to our problems.<br \/>\nWe characterize \u201cdebate\u201d as a rational process of sorting competing ideas, but it isn\u2019t. In America, \u201cdebate\u201d is just another word for \u201cbrawl.\u201d No one learns a new point of view when they are jumped in an alley or hop into the monkey knife fighting pit; you show up with what you\u2019ve got, and pound on each other until someone flees or collapses.<br \/>\nIf you are about to take exception to this characterization, then riddle me this: If you are \u201crational\u201d and \u201cpro-gun control,\u201d then why the hell aren\u2019t you already familiar with the SCotUS 2007 opinions? Isn\u2019t an understanding of the current state of the Second Amendment sorta-kinda vital to \u201cdebating\u201d about the Second Amendment?<br \/>\nAnd if you \u201crationally support gun rights\u201d \u2013 likely because of personal safety issues \u2013 then why aren\u2019t you already concerned that guns appear to protect people once for every two times they hurt someone? Would you take meds your physician prescribed while noting nonchalantly, \u201cOh, FYI, if these pills do anything at all, there\u2019s a 64% chance they\u2019ll hurt or kill you, and an unknown \u2013 but very high \u2013 likelihood they\u2019ll do nothing. But they might also save your life. Maybe. We haven\u2019t really done the research on that.
