{"id":360,"date":"2015-05-29T09:04:01","date_gmt":"2015-05-29T09:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dave0.nfshost.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2015\/05\/29\/junkshop-percussion-in-the-wild-techno-goes-acoustic\/"},"modified":"2016-04-21T14:32:43","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T18:32:43","slug":"junkshop-percussion-in-the-wild-techno-goes-acoustic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2015\/05\/junkshop-percussion-in-the-wild-techno-goes-acoustic\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Junkshop Percussion&#8221; in the Wild: Techno Goes Acoustic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been wrapping up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nostarch.com\/jamband\">my new book<\/a>, which dedicates an entire section to &#8220;Junkshop Percussion&#8221;: washboards and cajons and spoons and buckets, and all the great &#8220;instruments&#8221; that are just detritus-plus-panache.<\/p>\n<p>So, folks like this&#8211;who take a musical form that arose from digitization and mechanization via insanely expensive studio gear, then make it a dirt-cheap, no-tech, hands-on, all-acoustic expressive art form&#8211;just tickle me pink.<\/p>\n<p>Like this guy, he&#8217;s a pure delight with the speed, steadiness, and raw sweat of that drum-n-bass:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8ZC0WHcQFEg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nAround the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8ZC0WHcQFEg?t=2m15s\">2:15<\/a> mark this guy emulates a classic EMD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gIwILhWBbNM\">filter sweep<\/a> with his foot muting a bar; w\u00fcnderbar!!!<\/p>\n<p>Or check out the Pipe Guy&#8217;s PVC-and-flip-fop electro trance:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-0gED3rn2Tc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nOMFG! I *love* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ipMPb0MZr3w\">old-school analog drum machine claps<\/a> (like you get on a Roland 808, or my treasured <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boss_Doctor_Rhythm_DR-110\">Boss DR-110<\/a>)&#8211;and he&#8217;s getting that sound from a goddamned flip-flop! *Outstanding!* I especially dig the point near <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-0gED3rn2Tc?t=2m55s\">2:55<\/a>, where dude launches into a cover of Iggy Azalea&#8217;s &#8220;Fancy&#8221;, then abruptly segues into the White Stripes&#8217; &#8220;Seven Nation Army&#8221; (although I&#8217;m kinda disappointed that this never becomes a cover of the Knight Rider theme, &#8217;cause it hovers right at the cusp of doing so).<\/p>\n<p>There is a future where these dudes appear on a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skynet_(Terminator)\">Skynet<\/a>-hosted show called <i>HUMANS GOT TALENT<\/i>.
