{"id":3612,"date":"2023-11-09T12:46:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T17:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/?p=3612"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:45:36","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T01:45:36","slug":"10-will-erase-1000-of-medical-debt-in-michigan-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2023\/11\/10-will-erase-1000-of-medical-debt-in-michigan-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"$10 will erase $1000 of Medical Debt in Michigan RIGHT NOW! &#x1f4b8;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We are facing&nbsp;<strong><em>a lot<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;of terrifying problems right now:&nbsp;<em>climate disaster, civil unrest, labor injustice, opioid abuse, the profusion of hate and extremism.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most problems cannot be solved by throwing money at them.&nbsp;<strong><em>Medical debt is one that can.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m collaborating on a project to <a href=\"https:\/\/ripmedicaldebt.org\/campaign\/eliminate-medical-debt-in-michigan\/?\">erase $1 million of medical debt in Michigan<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, because of the way this debt is bundled, it&#8217;s possible to buy it extremely cheaply on the open market, for just a penny on the dollar (i.e., $1 buys $100 of bundled medical debt).  If bill collectors buy that debt, they will hound the debtor for the full value of the debt, even though they only paid 1\/100th of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if we buy the debt, we can just forgive it and clear the books for someone who had some bad luck and didn&#8217;t have the insurance to cover it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, in Michigan this burden hits Black communities especially hard; buying and erasing debt here is thus a &#8220;Good Deed twofer\u201d: one donation relieves a family\u2019s economic woes <strong><em>AND<\/em><\/strong> strikes a blow for racial and economic justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bunch of you have already given (we&#8217;re over 76% of the way to our goal!), and that&#8217;s <strong><em>amaaaaazing!<\/em><\/strong>  The more you give, the more we can forgive.
