But as he and his family were packing up to leave, a friend who had caravanned with them made what seemed like an outlandish proposal: &#8220;If you want to do something to help,&#8221; he said, &#8220;you should go to Detroit.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[Source: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inc.com\/magazine\/201604\/stacy-perman\/shinola-watch-history-manufacturing-heritage-brand.html\">The Real History of America&#8217;s Most Authentic Fake Brand<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In terms of &#8220;taking down&#8221; Shinola, this article is interesting for two conspicuous blind spots:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It says nothing about the watches themselves\u2014which watch folk have criticized for years as nothing special. \u00a0A decent watch, sure\u2014a solid Swiss movement in a nice Chinese case, assembled in Detroit\u2014and\u00a0basically worth the money as an intro-level luxury watch, but nothing to shout about, really.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fully accepting that Shinola founder Kartsotis came to Detroit\u00a0&#8220;to do something to help.&#8221; \u00a0Shinola pays\u00a0$12\/hr.\u00a0\u00a0While that&#8217;s above Michigan&#8217;s\u00a0minimum wage, it still <a href=\"http:\/\/livingwage.mit.edu\/metros\/19820\">hovers between a living and poverty wage in Detroit<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 There are a lot of things an incredibly rich white man could do to &#8220;help Detroit.&#8221; Adding 100\u00a0<\/span>low-wage jobs\u00a0is pretty fucking minimal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-558\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dave0.com\/sbsb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/shinola-knife-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"shinola knife\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/>In the interest of full disclosure, I should note that none of this is to say that I&#8217;m above the allure: I&#8217;ve been walking around with a Shinola(-branded Bear &amp; Sons) pocket knife for a couple years.
