{"id":707,"date":"2016-07-20T09:15:29","date_gmt":"2016-07-20T13:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/?p=707"},"modified":"2016-07-20T09:15:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T13:15:29","slug":"the-art-of-the-not-making-a-total-putz-of-yourself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/index.php\/2016\/07\/the-art-of-the-not-making-a-total-putz-of-yourself\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of the Not-Making-a-Total-Putz-of-Yourself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">If nothing else of substance, the last couple days of RNC Trump Speech brouhaha have offered a pair of very important business lessons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-663\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-663 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.davideriknelson.com\/sbsb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Trump-spittle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"art by DonkeyHotey https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/donkeyhotey\/\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(art by DonkeyHotey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">My initial impression was that we were looking at this kind of fantastically gobsmacking paradox:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><strong>A candidate renowned for his wealth and business acumen is either unable to afford or incapable of selecting competent help.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/20\/us\/politics\/melania-trump-convention-speech.html?nytmobile=0&amp;_r=0\">But according to this article<\/a>, that doesn&#8217;t seem to be the case.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Skilled workers are perfectly happy to hold their noses and accept Trump dollars, but their employer is totally unable to actually use the tools he purchases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This puts me in the mind of a business aphorism (which I <i>believe<\/i> I first heard from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ramit\">Ramit Sethi<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><\/span><b><i> <\/i><\/b><i>students hire <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students; <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>B<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students hire <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>C<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">To mansplain: <i>An <\/i><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><i> student knows what good work looks like, that good work is hard, and is confident that they can reliably produce good work through the judicious application of hard work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><i> students want to see good work, and do not want to look like putzes, so they choose subordinates who are as capable as themselves (if not more so).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><b><i>B<\/i><\/b><i> students may occasionally do good work, but since they don&#8217;t know this other stuff (about how to judiciously apply hard work to reliably produce that good work), they can be pretty insecure.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They hire down the ladder to shore up their ego.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But, of course, Trump is proving to not even be a <b>B<\/b> student; the <b>B<\/b> student is insecure and frustrated because he or she <i>knows<\/i> what good, consistent work looks like\u2014they just can&#8217;t produce it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump is a <b>C<\/b> student wallowing in the depths of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect\">Dunning-Kruger Syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, to revise:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><\/span><b><i> <\/i><\/b><i>students hire <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students; <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>B<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students hire <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>C<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>C<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students hire an <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>A<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> student, a <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>B<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> student, two <\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><i>C<\/i><\/b><\/span><i> students, a guy on Craigslist, their cousin, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Mike Tyson, six doctors, and a personal trainer, follow none of their advice, and then scream at them when they get the <\/i><b><i>C<\/i><\/b><i> they earned.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Hard to believe it&#8217;s just 185 days until a middle-school &#8220;Plagiarism&#8221;
